Will Asin make a comeback? February 3, 2010

The South Press has been extremely harsh on Asin since her move to Bollywood IMO and they are not going to be graceful on  her decision (if correct and for whatever reasons) to come back. Snide comments galore.

The Kollywood grapevine is abuzz that Asin has confirmed that she will do the Tamil remake of Siddique’s Malayalam Bodyguard with ‘Ilayathalapathy’ Vijay! Asin is likely to do the female lead in the film done by Nayanthara in Malayalam. It is a strong author backed role and is the pivot around which the film revolves.

Actually three years back when director Siddique had narrated the story to Asin she had promised to do it in Tamil if Vijay was the hero. Since then there was a climate change as she became a top heroine in Bollywood and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, she lost interest in Kollywood.

Now things have changed after London Dreams turned out to be a nightmare for the actress. Today she has no live projects in Bollywood, as she refused to do films with lesser mortals like Shaheed Kapoor or Saif! More alarming is that she is likely to lose some of her lucrative endorsement deals if she does not do a film in 2010.

However the proverbial last straw was when Sanjay Leela Bhansali confirmed that Vidya Balan will be his heroine in his new film Chenab Gandhi, with Amitabh Bachchan and John Abraham. The Mumbai press had earlier said that Asin was the front runner, but Vidya with Paa and Ishqia has piped her to the post.

Another role she was backing on Shah Rukh Khan’s Anubhav Sinha directed scifi thriller Ra 1, has gone to Bollywood’s number one actress Kareena Kapoor. All this has left Asin high and dry and she withdrew into her shell.

The best thing for her now is to sign a Tamil film before it is too late. Asin can still give Tamaannah a run for her ‘numero uno’ position. She is still a major brand and has a strong fan base in rural Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The buzz is that Siddique and Vijay have spoken to Asin, and is waiting for her to give a positive reply before the end of the month, as the film will start rolling in April end. Vijay feels Asin is his lucky mascot as both their films together Sivakasi and Pokkiri were super hits.

A source close to the development said: “They have offered her a fabulous amount to do the film. Asin knows the subject and is also keen to do it, but the trouble is her ego is not allowing her to do a Tamil film as she is now living in a make believe world where she thinks one of the Khan’s SRK, Salman or an Aamir will do a film with her”

If/when Asin returns to Kollywood, I’ll keep an eye out for her upcoming projects, but I doubt she’ll regain her top position. I never thought she was a good “fit” for Bollywood, and her apparent lack of “A-list”(for lack of a better term) offers confirms my gut instinct.

I like her. She is so pretty. I think she was getting really popular in Bollywood after Ghajini and all went downhill after LD. Salman didn’t make any effort to promote her at all. This is the first time I am hearing about a Ra 1 offer, I don’t think it’s true.

I was just thinking about Asin earlier. One of my co-workers saw Ghajini at Blockbusters and rented it. He thought Asin was hot, lol

  4. Kiran Says:

Asin did a really really dumb thing by wasting so much time chasing after Bollywood.
She was in the top position in the south. She should have taken up any interesting offers from bollywood, but to completely uproot herself & chase only bollywood scripts was a dumb thing to do.
It will be really tough for her to regain her position in the south now.

Yay! this news is confirmed now. She is making her ‘comeback’ in the remake of recent malayalam film Body Guard directed by siddique. She will be paired with Vijay. I am happy with the pair. They look great together.

The Malayalam original only released a few weeks ago but reviews for it were negative so I hope the remake will have a revised, improved script.

    From Pokkiri

    From Sikavasi
