Other Language films curtailed in Kerala! April 6, 2010

It may sound shocking but from May 1, 2010 no new releases in other languages (Tamil, Hindi, and English) will be allowed in Kerala simultaneously with the all India release.

.

Film Distributors Association Kerala (FDAK) has decided to implement this controversial decision to clip the wings of other language films (OLF) in Kerala.

.

Remember in the last few months films like Avatar, 2012, Vinnayithaandi Varuvaaya, Vettaikaran, 3 Idiots, My Name Is Khan has done fantastic business in Kerala.

.

For example if a Tamil film like Vijay’s Sura is to release worldwide on May 1, it cannot release simultaneously in Kerala! As per the new order of FDAK, OLF can release in Kerala only two weeks after its worldwide release. It smacks of protectionism, and a subtle effort to scuttle the popularity of OLF in Kerala.

Original cast for V Kumar’s Sci Fi 24 which has now been shelved.

.

It seems  that the producer has dropped the director and his story but kept Vikram and Ileana. The new director is Boopathy Pandian and it is going to be a ‘cop’ story like Saamy.

.

…so latest is that it will be dubbed into Telugu and  Brahmanandam will be the comedian. Devi Sri Prasad will do the Music.

At last, the good news of Illeana’s willingness to do a Tamil film made her fans in that state quite happy.  That she has not been able to do a single Tamil film in years, owing to her involvement in Telugu film after film here, is well-known.  Illeana has reportedly signed a film with Vikram, much to the surprise of her rivals and fans.

To be directed by Vikram K Kumar of 13B fame, it has Chiyan Vikram playing the lead.  The film was to kick off in the month of November, but it did not take off for some reasons.

Vijay’s 50th film – Sura **stills** (Updated – trailers) March 19, 2010

God! even the choreography is same as for Bommali. I am so disappointed with the lazy job that Mani Sharma has done for this 😦 I am considering not going to see this.

Shining brighter than ever

Recently, when Surya was called to receive the Vijay TV Best Actor award for Vaaranam Aayiram, from Kamal Hassan, he came on stage and overcome by emotion, prostrated before Kamal Hassan. A deeply moved Kamal Hassan pulled Surya up and clasped him in a tight hug. The crowd went hysterical. Tears started pouring down the cheeks of veteran actor Shivakumar, Surya’s father. I catch up with Surya on location at Ramavaram, Chennai, where he is shooting for Singham.

m

surya interview‘I have grown up worshipping Kamal Hassan. To receive the award from him, especially when he was also nominated, was too much to handle.’

m

Excerpts from the interview:

m

It was a touching gesture….It was a very humbling moment. I have grown up worshipping Kamal Hassan. To receive the award from him, especially when he was also nominated, was too much to handle. I reacted spontaneously.

m

But what about your father Shivakumar, a popular actor himself?
Strangely, not so. Though he was in the movies, at home he is like any working parent. Sometimes, when I see his old movies, I wonder if it is the same man sitting next to me who is on-screen giving such a brilliant performance! My coming into the film world was not pre-determined. After finishing college in Coimbatore, I joined a textile company and worked. After some time, when I decided to take up acting, there were huge doubts  about whether it was the right choice or not. But I jumped in and here I am today (smiles).

For a 25-film-wonder you have scaled amazing heights, both in terms of performance as well as box-office returns. How do you manage the adulation?

Thank you. I’m extremely aware that this too shall pass. But it did not happen overnight. I had my share of struggling days too. The success came slowly, step by step. I got used to it gradually. My feet are firmly planted on the ground. The film is a make-believe world, let me be in reality.

Will Asin make a comeback? February 3, 2010

The South Press has been extremely harsh on Asin since her move to Bollywood IMO and they are not going to be graceful on  her decision (if correct and for whatever reasons) to come back. Snide comments galore.

The Kollywood grapevine is abuzz that Asin has confirmed that she will do the Tamil remake of Siddique’s Malayalam Bodyguard with ‘Ilayathalapathy’ Vijay! Asin is likely to do the female lead in the film done by Nayanthara in Malayalam. It is a strong author backed role and is the pivot around which the film revolves.

m

Actually three years back when director Siddique had narrated the story to Asin she had promised to do it in Tamil if Vijay was the hero. Since then there was a climate change as she became a top heroine in Bollywood and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, she lost interest in Kollywood.

m

Now things have changed after London Dreams turned out to be a nightmare for the actress. Today she has no live projects in Bollywood, as she refused to do films with lesser mortals like Shaheed Kapoor or Saif! More alarming is that she is likely to lose some of her lucrative endorsement deals if she does not do a film in 2010.

m

However the proverbial last straw was when Sanjay Leela Bhansali confirmed that Vidya Balan will be his heroine in his new film Chenab Gandhi, with Amitabh Bachchan and John Abraham. The Mumbai press had earlier said that Asin was the front runner, but Vidya with Paa and Ishqia has piped her to the post.
